Energy Myths & Facts - 90% of our electricity is generated by fossil fuels and uranium. Given the significant push for greater use of renewable energies and alternative fuels and repeated warnings about mankind impact on the global climate. Luckily, many of the steps we can take to save energy and reduce your carbon footprint.

MYTH : Electric/Hybrid cars are slow and ugly.

FACTS : Automotive manufacturer are very close to developing electric/hybrid cars that match the performance of conventional vehicles. Example, the Tesla electric sports car amazes all those who experience its drive and demonstrated that electric cars can be sexy.

MYTH : Idling is good for your engine.

FACTS : Excessive idling can actually damage your engine components, including cylinders, spark plugs, and exhaust systems. Fuel is only partially combusted when idling because an engine does not operate at its peak temperature. This leads to the build up of fuel residues on cylinder walls that can damage engine components and increase fuel consumption.

MYTH : The engine should be warmed up before driving.

FACTS : Idling is not an effective way to warm up your vehicle, even in cold weather. The best way to do this is to drive the vehicle. With today modern engines, you need no more than 30 seconds of idling on winter days before driving away.

MYTH : Restarting your vehicle is hard on the engine and uses more gas than if you leave it running.

FACTS : Frequent restarting has little impact on engine components like the battery and the starter motor. Component wear caused by restarting the engine will likely be recovered several times over in fuel savings from reduced idling. The bottom line is that more than ten seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting the engine.

MYTH : When my appliance is turned off, its off.

FACTS : Most devices continue to consume power when they are switched off, sometimes as much power as when they are on. Switch off mains when not in use is the smart approach.

MYTH : The freezer is more efficient when there is more food in it.

FACTS : Yes its more efficient when its full because all of the frozen items actually help it maintain the temperature. So when everything is down to that cool temperature, it maintains the temperature better. Tips, if you canít fill up the freezer with foods, you can always use plastic bags filled with water, which is ice when freezed and does the same thing.

MYTH : Leaving computers and other appliances on makes them last longer.

FACTS : While it used to be the case that switching some appliances on and off drastically reduced their useful lifetimes, these old problems have been largely overcome through better design.

MYTH : Buying an efficient air conditioner will automatically reduce my energy bill.

FACTS : This is true to some extent, but not if the equipment is not sized or installed properly. If a typical air conditioner and duct systems are improperly installed, it can waste 1/3 or more energy used by the air conditioner. New and replacement equipment and ducts need to be properly designed and installed to realize all the possible savings. The same applies for proper insulation on doors, windows.

MYTH : Turning a light bulb on and off uses less energy than leaving it on.

FACTS : Yes, it use less energy for incandescent / LED lighting but frequent switching of fluorescent lighting can shorten their expected life, taking away 3 hours per restart of the total lifespan.

MYTH : Fluorescent lighting can reproduce color as well as halogen lights.

FACTS : Only a few types of Fluorescent lighting can reproduce colour at a similar level to halogen bulbs but are not easily available. These special fluorescent lighting are commonly used in aquarium and cost 3~5 time more expensive than a regular one you can pickup in a supermarket.

MYTH : All LEDs are the same.

FACTS : That will be the simplest way to answer any difficult questions. Fact is that there are quite a lot of LED manufacturer worldwide and not all are produced the same way.

There are many grade and efficiency levels and most manufacturer tends to use a lower type to minimise costs. Do not be surprised that our 5watts can be brighter than a 10watt type from other manufacturer

MYTH : LEDs are at least 10 times more efficient than any other kind of lighting.

FACTS : LEDs are about 5 times more efficient as incandescent and 50 percent more efficient than fluorescent lights.

MYTH : LEDs last forever and never need replacement.

FACTS : LEDs lifespan are much longer than most other lighting, 50,000hrs are often claimed but definitely not forever. There is a lot of low-quality products in the market that doesnt even last 1,000hrs so watch out.

MYTH : LEDs dont give off any heat unlike incandescent.

FACTS : LEDs do give off heat and about the same amount as fluorescent light but it required a metal casing(heatsink) to dissipate away the unwanted heat. All electronic devices will give out heat as part of its energy conversion.

MYTH : Just get the cheapest LED light.

FACTS : The lower quality ones are cheap now but beware of its reliability. A better quality type will last many times longer and more affordable in the long run. Remember that sometimes the labour and effort to change a faulty bulb cost more than the new bulb itself.

MYTH : Some LED Bulb doesnt need heatsink

FACTS :To lower the cost of a LED bulb, a compromise has to be made. Make a guess what they choose to eliminate.
